Coming together to help the people (and animals) of Maui
The wildfires that scorched Maui have left an unimaginable scar on the beautiful island and its inhabitants. Our hearts go out to the communities affected. From the mainland, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and helpless seeing the images of Lahaina burnt beyond recognition and hearing of the loss of life due to this disaster.
But we can all take action and help with the recovery. Consider joining Blue Toby in contributing to organizations working on the ground to make a difference. All the basic life necessities - food, water, a place to sleep - are needed by so many in Maui. Let's not forget the animals that are suffering - from displaced pets to native animals. A Facebook group has been set up to help reunite lost pets with families. The Maui Humane Society is expecting an influx of injured animals as well.
A bright note is the heroic effort to save the animals at the Maui Bird Conservation Center. A staff member and neighbor fought off the fire till firefighters arrived. Their efforts saved critically endangered birds - including some that are already extinct in the wild. This act of bravery is one of many during this disaster.

Laulima is a pillar of Hawaiian culture meaning "many hands working together". To achieve large goals, it takes many people making an effort. The recovery effort on Maui will surely require many hands working together.
The laulima ethic is also critical to caring for our planet in the face of climate change, which disproportionally affects island communities. While the wildfire on Maui was due to many factors, the effects of climate change likely intensified the effect. And the extreme weather events we have experienced around the globe this year may continue.
